Sewer Department

1. Treatment capacity of the Wastewater Treatment Plant is 10 million gallons per day.   The collection system is comprised of low pressure and gravity lines, mostly in the corporate city limits of Orange Beach.  Other areas supplied by the water treatment facility are low-pressure lines to Ono Island and the Miflin Creek region.

    

   Objective

2. The primary purpose of our mission is to provide a product free of pollutants and materials that could harm the environment or the general public.  Our discharge permit issued by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is one of the strictest in the state.  The treatment facility is also closely monitored by the U.S. -E.P.A. and various local governmental agencies. The liquid leaving the facillity is discharged directly into the Intracoastal Waterway and therefore has a critical impact on the local fishing industry.   We are pleased to be an environmentally friendly operation.

    

   Recent Accomplishments:

3. During the past four years the Operation has upgraded all primary lift stations and installed miles of improved force mains.  The primary treatment facility has been doubled in size and is capable of tremendous expansion at minimal cost.   These improvements have been done with a 30% decrease in billing rates to our customers.

   Future Objectives

4. Due to the rapid increase in construction, the department is constantly in a state of improvement.  The collection system is being expanded on a daily basis to provide sewer availability to every resident of the city, as well as extending lines into the outlying areas of the county.  This expansion is possible due to the increased treatment capacity of the primary facility, which is designed for double the current population.  The plant staff and field crews are required to attend Continuing Education Classes each month to keep them current with changes in regulations and improve their job skills.  This training is provided by the city to ensure the safety of the residents and visitors to our area.
